Perfios updates : A must have Money Manager

We already reviewed Perfios, an excellent online personal finance manager. “Perfios is for anyone who wishes to solve the problem of managing wealth distributed among various asset classes and among various institutions”.

Welcome to Perfios_1254231948429

Now Perfios has introduced following new and very helpful features.

(1) Auto-Categorization – Forging right ahead with our objective of providing high degree of automation in Personal finance management, we have introduced this functionality. Don’t worry any more about the mundane task of categorizing hundreds (if not thousands!) of transactions. Automatically fetch  your transactions from your  financial institutions and Perfios would apply  its auto-categorization heuristics to apply categories to your transactions. Think Perfios made a mistake wrongly categorizing a transaction? No problem. Just correct those transactions and the module "learns" and subsequently will not make the same mistake again and similar transactions are marked as per the category you chose for those transactions. Simple!
(2) My Documents – No more hunting for documentary evidence associated with your transactions. Now upload scanned documents, soft copies of statements etc.  Associate documents to your accounts or at a global level. If you want, you can "lock" uploaded documents by supplying a password and the documents will be encrypted and stored on our server and only YOU can view it (by providing the password to unlock). Make use of it as your own safe and secure electronic vault!
(3) Improved statement forwarding engine for faster and more accurate processing.
(4) Upload financial statements sent by your institution to automatically update your accounts. Apart from excel sheet, now you can also upload statements in PDF, HTML, ZIP and other formats too. No more painful manual entry!
(5) New institution support: We now support fetching of equity holdings from ILFS.

They have also listed following upcoming features.

(1) Perfios on the go – WAP/Mobile support to access Perfios service from practically anywhere in the world.
(2) News and Market information – We were kind of slow to start on this one but we are making amends by providing a window to the financial world where you can get top of the hour news and market updates.
(3) Group Support – Want to provide a read-only view to your spouse or your chartered accountant? This is the feature that will help you do it.

What is our call?

I am highly impressed with their offering. I am an addict of Google products. It is the only service space where Google has no foot prints. Perfios would revolutionize Indian Personal Finance Space very soon as Google did with Gmail in email service. Though their revenue model is still unclear, I wish them all success.

Is it a Gold Bubble ? Not Yet says Nirmal Bang

The Big Bang

Our outlook depends on dividing the world of bullions into two halves - investment demand and jewelry/physical demand. The indicators  affirm our conviction that investment demand would remain alive in Western countries backed by a weaker dollar and the onset of inflation in the US. China would play a very significant role in taking this metal higher from these levels. The kind of fall witnessed in the dollar recently must have given jitters to the Chinese authorities. This development may compel China to intensify buying in gold to convert a significant part
of their foreign exchange reserves in gold. In addition, a decline in sales by Central Banks and reduction in hedging positions by gold producers indicate that they too are expecting higher prices. An improvement in jewelry demand by non-western buyers like China, India and Middle East would be a bonus. We are of the firm view that gold will touch the levels of $1100 per ounce in the near term

Import, export, and more with the new Google Sites API

Official Google Enterprise Blog: Import, export, and more with the new Google Sites API: "Today we're pleased to advance that story by introducing a new API for Google Sites in Labs."

The use cases are plentiful for businesses:
  • Update Google Sites from 3rd party applications – e.g. your sales team's Google Sites pages can update automatically when new leads are added to your CRM system.
  • Migrate files and content from workspace applications like Microsoft SharePoint and Lotus Notes to Google Sites.
  • Export Google Sites pages, edit them offline, and re-import the updated content.
  • Export your sites, including every page revision, for backup.
  • Easily monitor changes across your important internal and public sites, all from a single gadget.
  • Push new content like changes to employee policies or a new corporate logo to any site on your domain, even sites created by individual employees.
  • Best of all, while this API is brand new, application developers will find it rather familiar – it is, after all, a Google Data API. And like our 16 other Google Data APIs, this one comes with all the standard protocol support around authentication and querying that you'd expect. You'll find everything you need to get started on the Google Code pages, including links to documentation and sample applications.

The Iterative Web App: 'Move' and 'Enhanced Refresh' for iPhones

Official Google Mobile Blog: The Iterative Web App: 'Move' and 'Enhanced Refresh': "Last week we released two new features which can save you clicks when using web-based Gmail on an iPhone or Android-powered device.

The first one is 'Move', which you can find under 'More' in the Floaty Bar. The 'Move' function lets you label and archive a message in a single step. So as soon as you 'move' a conversation to a certain label, that email will disappear from your Inbox and show up under that label. We introduced this feature to Gmail for your PC earlier this year, and now we're making it available for your mobile phone as well."

How to install and operate ICICI Bank’s iMobile in two different mobiles?

NTT DoCoMo FOMA card chip (green).

Image via Wikipedia

Consider this situation. You and your wife might be sharing the same ICICI Bank A/c. But you can register only one mobile number to operate iMobile(mobile Banking). So either you or your wife alone can access your A/c information and execute mobile money transfers. At present ICICI Bank won’t allow you to access your A/c from two different mobile numbers. This post is about “How to install and operate ICICI Bank’s iMobile in two different mobiles having two different mobile numbers”

  1. Register for mobile banking by giving one of your mobile numbers ( through online Net banking or through Phone banking )
  2. Then, SMS <IMOBILE> to <5676766> to download iMobile on your GPRS enabled JAVA phone .
  3. Install the Application in your mobile, and click on Activate menu.
  4. By this time, you would have received a Activation code to your Registered Mobile No.
  5. Enter this code in application when prompted
  6. After a successful validation, your iMobile application would download your A/c details, linked credit cards and payee details.
  7. Try to perform a fund transfer. Your iMobile would prompt you to undergo a “ Debit Card Grid value Validation” ( On the reverse of  debit card, you will find a grid. Every cell in the grid will have alphabets from A to P and numbers printed in them. When customers initiate an online transfer of funds through Internet Banking, the system will instruct them to enter specified numbers from the grid for authentication and verification. The transaction will be processed only after customer enters the correct values, as instructed.)
  8. Now exit the application.
  9. Then transfer your SIM card to Your wife’s mobile
  10. Then call the phone banking and place a “change of mobile device request”
  11. You would receive a new SMS containing a new iMobile download link.
  12. Click the link and download the application in your second mobile.  Then perform steps from 3 to 9.
  13. Then replace the SIMs to it’s original mobiles.
  14. Now onwards, you can access your ICICI Bank details from two different mobiles. You can install and access your A/c from any number of phones.
  15. These steps are also working for NGPay (HDFC Bank) and Atom Mobile Pay.

Perfios : Your online Personal Finance Manger

The users of Yodlee might  know about the usefulness of  an online Personal Finance Manager. It would automatically fetch all your bank and investment transactions from the supported banks and brokers and automatically categorize them for easy management. Though Yodlee primarily supports US customers and institutions, it also supports some important Indian institutions like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Sharekhan, India Infoline and Reliance Money. Only concern is that you have to provide your banking longin names and passwords. It’s other security features are awesome.

But I recently came across a nice Indian website , which supports more banks and brokers than Yodlee. “Perfios’s MyFinance application can quickly provide a 360 degree view of your financial health. Keep track of all your transactions across various financial accounts”.

Perfios - My Finance_1253369442012

It is presently available @ invitation only mode. Though the service is currently offered as free, it may charge a  fee. The site claims that “The founding team members have served as C-level executives in several multinational organizations and have been instrumental in setting up and managing global delivery teams. The members have also successfully transformed several start-up software companies into large, profit-making enterprises.”

  • It supports multiple bank accounts, credit cards, investment in multiple mutual funds schemes, equity investments etc
  • It helps to analyze your incomes and expenses and understand where you can make better savings.
  • It helps to keep all of your family’s financial data at one place to get a clear picture of the tax liability/ EMI’s/ Loans etc?
  • It has bill alert facility
  • It stores your passwords in encrypted form in your computer itself.

You can take a tour at here.

Our initial impression is that it is a better replacement for softwares  like Microsoft Money and Quicken. It gives service like which supports only US customers. Pricing should be reasonable. Promising startup in the Personal Finance arena. It fills an important need of Indian investors.

If you want to be invited when it is made available to public, please send a mail to

The DoubleClick Ad Exchange : Google

Official Google Blog: The DoubleClick Ad Exchange: growing the display advertising pie for everyone
Three principles underpin Google's approach to the display advertising field:

1. Simplify the system for buying and selling display ads: For example, our DoubleClick ad serving products help advertisers and publishers manage campaigns and ad formats across thousands of websites and from thousands of advertisers.

2. Deliver better performance that advertisers and agencies can measure: We're building a host of new features to help advertisers to run display ad campaigns across the Google Content Network (comprising hundreds of thousands of AdSense partner sites) and on YouTube. We're also developing better measurement and reporting technology so they can figure out what's working and what's not.

3. Open up the ecosystem: We want to democratize access to display advertising and make it accessible and open, like search advertising. We recently launched the Display Ad Builder to help businesses easily set up and run display ad campaigns. 80% of advertisers who use that product have never run a display ad campaign before.
We've been working hard to put these principles into practice, and today we're excited to announce the new DoubleClick Ad Exchange, a step towards creating a more open display advertising ecosystem for everyone. The Ad Exchange is a real-time marketplace that helps large online publishers on one side; and ad networks and agency networks on the other, buy and sell display advertising space.

These publishers and ad networks manage and represent large volumes of ads and ad space from lots of advertisers and websites. By bringing them together in an open marketplace in which prices are set in a real-time auction, the Ad Exchange enables display ads and ad space to be allocated much more efficiently. This improves returns for advertisers and enables publishers to get the most value out of their online content.

An explanation of the Ad Exchange is here (PDF). You can read in more detail about the features of the new DoubleClick Ad Exchange on the DoubleClick blog.

AdWords advertisers will be able to run ads on sites in the Ad Exchange, using their existing AdWords interface. This means more high quality sites for AdWords advertisers to run display ads on. Similarly, our AdSense publishers will benefit from more high-quality display advertisers coming through the Ad Exchange. You can read more about these benefits on the AdWords Blog and the AdSense Blog.

Pipavav Shipyard Limited –IPO -Avoid

Downtrend in the shipbuilding industry to continue in near future. Renegotiation / Cancellation of orders to impact top‐line and margins. Dependence on a few major customers. PSL has recently started its operations and have very limited operating history. So far company has obtained orders from only four customers namely: Golden Ocean, AVGI Maritime, Setaf SAS and ONGC and is highly dependent on them.

Lack of experience
Considering the downturn in shipbuilding industry, lack of experience of PSL in shipbuilding, low order book as compared to the size of shipyard and higher valuation as compared to its peers you should AVOID this IPO.

Thanks to Angel Broking for the analysis.

Safeguard yourself from online frauds! : ICICI Bank

English State Lottery Ticket 1814 issued by br...

Image via Wikipedia

Online frauds persuade the recipient to advance sums of money in the hope of realizing a significantly larger gain. This scam usually begins with a letter, e-mail or SMS sent supposedly to a selected recipient but actually sent to many, making an offer that would result in a large payoff to the recipient; and requires the recipient to part with some money in advance so as to receive the payoff.

ICICI Bank Online - Email Fraud_1252944664786

These  e-mailers or SMSes may offer you:

  • Prize money won in a lottery through e-mail draws for which you had not bought a ticket.

  • Employment opportunities in developed countries that sound too good to be true.

  • Commission in millions from the fraudster who claims to have inherited a fortune and wants you to help him invest in India.
  • Loans at a nominal rate of interest, by your paying a large sum as processing fees.

How does an online fraud work?

Step 1: Fraudsters send you an e-mail announcing an irresistible offer/opportunity of easy access to a large sum of money.
Step 2: They may ask you to send them scanned copies of personal documents, like your passport, proof of address, proof of ID, etc. so that it seems a genuine scheme.
Step 3: Soon, they ask you to deposit an advance fee (supposedly for customs, bank fees, transfer fees, etc.) in a certain bank account. They may sometimes ask you to even scan and mail them the receipt of the money deposited in their account.
Step 4: Once you deposit the funds, they pocket the money and stop further communication, leaving you with nothing in return.

Always Remember

1. Do not deposit funds in the form of cash/cheque in accounts of unknown people in response to dubious offers or representations.
2. Exercise caution and never share your banking details or lend your bank accounts to anyone – they could be fraudsters using your account for illicit activities for which you will be held liable.
3. Remember, nobody will part with his share of money for free.
4. In case of any doubt, please enquire before depositing into any bank account.
5. It’s your hard earned money – ensure that you spend it in the right way!

Thanks to : ICICI Bank

Always keep your CREDIT CARD in sight, when you give it for swiping.........

NEW YORK - MAY 20: In this photo illustration...

Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Mumbai: The next time you decide to use your credit card on a shopping trip, think again.. The Mumbai police have busted a hitech credit card fraud which they believe is the crime of the future.

Four gadget-savvy youngsters from Andheri, two of them software engineers, got together to earn a quick buck and ended up ripping off over Rs 3 lakh of citizens' money. The foursome were arrested by the Juhu police on Tuesday. Interestingly, one of the boys was all set to leave for the UnitedState s for a job in a well placed computer firm ..
According to the police, the mastermind of the gang is 19-year-old Leo Paul . A second-year engineering student at a Bandra college, Paul had read about a magnetic card-reading device which could store data once you swipe a card through it. Data from at least 12 such cards could be stored at a time. Paul realised that if credit cards were swiped though the machine, the personal data of a customer stored on it could be accessed. He then teamed with Akash Kamble , a 19-year-old Lokhandwala resident, and ordered the card-reader from  USA , using the Internet, since it's not available in  India ..
'The boys befriended a waiter at Kings International hotel at Juhu to take their plan ahead. Every time someone ate a meal in the hotel and paid by credit card, the waiter would discreetly swipe it through the magnetic card-reader, which is no more than 6-inches long and can be stored in the pocket,'' said investigating officer Ramesh Nangare.
Once the waiter was done, he would hand over the device to Paul who would download the data from the cards on to Kamble's personal computer. The duo would then feed the data into blank cards, available in the grey market. The cards were now ready to be used in Shopping malls and theatres, or to withdraw money from an ATM.
Senior inspector Pradeep S hinde said that the boys forged information from more than 22 cards in this manner. The fraud came to light after officials from HSBC bank complained to the police. The cops quizzed customers whose cards had been duplicated and discovered they had all visited Hotel Kings International and paid by credit card. Investigators then caught the waiter who led them to the four youngsters. Paul , Kamble and the two other collegians identified as Manoj Chauhan (24) and Mahesh Valani (20), have been reanded to police custody.
A portable magnetic cardreader can store data from around a dozen cards tha t have been swiped through it; made in China, the device was bought on the net for Rs 18,000.
The card-reader is connected to a computer and the entire data is transferred there.
The data is then stored in blank cards available in the grey market..
These duplicate cards can now be used to buy a fortune and also withdraw money from ATMs.

Oil India — IPO: Don’t Subscribe

Side view photograph of a Great One Horned Ind...

Image via Wikipedia

Oil India’s IPO has received positive rating across all brokerages and pink papers. Some even forcefully recommend this IPO with reasons like “Unlike other recent IPOs, OIL has left something on the table for investors. Investors can subscribe at the cut-off price and hold the stock for the medium-term”.  Then why we didn’t recommend this issue?

Risk of owning a oil sector PSU is very high. This company needs to share the Govt.’s subsidy on petroleum products. Any increased terrorist activities and political instability in Assam  (95% of assets of this company located in Assam) would jeopardize the future of this company. Very poor management quality with red tapeisam. Wide expectation of this company would repeat the performance of Adani Power and NHPC.

We strongly recommend to Avoid. You won’t regret.

Nirmal Bang in it’s latest newsletter advised to book profits in Maruti.  To quote

After the Q1FY10 results, we had recommended HOLD on Maruti. at Rs. 1290 on the 23rd July 2009 with a price target of Rs. 1475. At Rs. 1545 the stock is trading at a P/E multiple of 21.67 based on FY10E earnings. • We believe at the current price or Rs. 1545 per share, the stock looks fairly priced Thus we now recommend to book partial profits at current levels as we do not see any major upside in the  stock from these levels given the current scenario and capacities
of the company.
